Industry Associations - PRSA

 Public Relations Society of America

The field of public relations is defined as the professional maintenance of a favorable public image by an organization or a famous person. The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) is a community geared to strengthen, provide networking opportunities, professional recognition, learning opportunities, intelligence and a job center for those who are practitioners of the public relations industry.

This industry association fine-tunes its resources in to several interest sections, entertainment and sports being one of them. PRSA offers a customized profile, which allows the use of exclusive member benefits—online resources, preferred PRSA pricing, insurance and other vendor offers. Membership offers many additional benefits—professional development opportunities, code of ethics for PR, professional network of more than 21,000 members, a job center with additional employment opportunities, several publications that keep members abreast of trends and industry updates and assistance with industry challenges.

In order to preview the programs available, one must become a member; however it is clear this community has much to offer. PRSA offers the opportunity to pass on RFP’s to fellow members. This association not only provides a job center page, but the opportunity to take advantage of RFP’s or RFQ’s—which is available to the general Public Relations population! This is just a small example of what PRSA has to offer with this platform. PRSA is a huge asset to the industry.

A Life of Purpose

A Life of Purpose

Rick Warren: A Life of Purpose

Many times the question is asked--whats in your hand?  What does this mean, what does it question...It questions your influence, affluence and identity.  Rick Warren, pastor and author of Purpose Driven Life reflects on this question on TED.com.  Immediately one would assume that all a pastor has to speak on is God.  Well, this is true, however, no matter your belief, Rick Warren addresses something that we all struggle with.

Why am I here? Do you ever find yourself stating--there has got to be more to life than this?? Warren poses this same question and concludes that discovering your purpose will provide each of us with an answer to this question. He notes that this question is the primary "human issue" but reaffirms us by stating that each of us were created for a purpose and to serve a purpose.  He reassures us by noting that (he believes, as do I) that none of us were a mistake--our parents may have been, but we are NOT.

The book Purpose Driven Life is a 40 day journal journey that assists individuals in becoming aware of what their purpose is. With this in mind, it is important for us to understand, whatever our gift or talent is for it is to be used for affluence and influence. Then the question is posed--"what is in your hand".  This refers to your gift, talent, or skill.  He gives reference to NBA players: a basketball.  While they may only actually play ball for 8-10 years of their life; they will remain a NBA Player for the rest of their lives.

In other words, who you are and what you do will follow you for the rest of your life.  It important to live life on purpose and in purpose as well. Whats in your hand will not only represent your identity, but your income as well as your influence. Ones personal brand alone can be a tangible influence to one person, one city, one country or even the world.

Since influence can be so great, I encourage each one of us to find your purpose and life in it. Find out whats in your hand and use it. The more purpose driven we are, the more purposeful we are.
